The Microbial Oxidative Degradation Analyzer (MODA) is an apparatus of weighing a small amount of carbon dioxide generated by the activities of microbials. When discussing the biodegradability of plastic, it is necessary to weigh very precisely exactly. Therefore, the following methods are used for MODA, and it became to be one of the international standards in ISO.
- Removing the carbon dioxide from air
- Inducting the carbon dioxide-free air into compost.
- Removing moisture contained in generated gas.
- Absorbing the carbon dioxide with the soda lime and the calcium chloride from the gas.
- Weighing the soda lime and the calcium chloride that absorbed carbon dioxide.
According to the ISO14855−2, the evaluation test is done by applying three kinds of tests : those are blank(compost only), compost mixed with standard sample(cellulose), and compost mixed with sample to test. Basic technology of MODA can be applied to according to the ISO14855-2, each test need to be done by 2 units respectively, so that totally 6 units are used to do the test. Before MODA is introduced to the market, it was necessary to apply testing with a large-scale tank by large-scale samples. MODA realizes to execute same testing easily in laboratory base.
Test methodology under not only the measurement under an aerobic condition but also various environmental conditions now.
- ISO17556: Biodegradability measurement of plastic under aerobic soil condition
- Biodegradability measurement of plastic under anaerobic slurry condition
- Measurement of small animal breath system function for test research
A total number of shipments of MODA have already exceeded 60. In the world, many researchers are utilizing MODA in their laboratory.
